Yay Snow!!

The piste and the pissedFinally we have some proper snow in Cornwall… It’s been about 5 years in the making, but today the weather let rip and gave us a good dousing of the cold white flakes.

As per usual, as soon as the first flakes fall they shortcircuit everyone’s driving ability and we have major gridlock everywhere with my lovely lady taking nearly an hour to travel between Pool & Redruth… Look ma no wheels! To avoid the prospect of trying to get down then back up two notorious hills, even she had to leave the car a few minutes away from home, but good job too because anyone else who ventured further would have had to abandon their no-longer trusty steeds to fate, sledgers and idiots who think that because they have a Scooby, they can drive like Colin Macrae. This idiot could not even go 10mph without hitting 2 cars, even when the smarter kids on the street suggested he give up. Anyway, he distracted our community copper long enough for the kids to start bombing down the hill again!

Flippin' spongers get everywhere…Check out some pics of the new craze that’s hopefully not sweeping too hard, but skimming down a hill near you. I would have joined in but I did not have anything slidey that…

a) …belonged to my grandad/older brother/Cormac

b) …I cared about too little not to trash - my sponge.

Er, 1 veg basket? And, contrary to popular current opinion, a bin lid doth not a slidey thing make…

Oh well, here’s fingers crossed for a snow day tomorrow.

Best Job Ever…

I have been freelancing for the past year and was getting on okay, but in July I stumbled across a job advert that spiked my curiosity. Anyway, to cut a long story short, I applied for the job, got an interview, trialed - part time over 2 months and started full-time again in October. I am now helping to build an army of robots to take over the world*

Google Chrome…

So much for my rant about relying on Google to much - I have been running Google Chrome too, yes I admit it, but hey as a web developer, I have to check out browsers to make sure my sites don’t break…

Bloody Google

Why does the whole world seem to revolve around Google…

I have been trying to work on 3 different web projects today and have been hampered because something is wrong with Google - i.e. their entire infrastructure appears to be down from where I am sitting.

This would not seem to be a huge problem as I can use Yahoo to search, but the as so many websites rely on Google Analytics & Adwords, etc.  I am still stuffed:  When Google’s servers go down, all the other sites break because they hang when trying to load content from Google.

So, I can’t download the latest version of Wordpress, I can’t seem to read all the blogs from one particular aggregator.  I am having problems using my time tracking tool, plus a load of other stuff, which means I can’t do my job today through circumstances beyond my control.

So much for the internet being unbreakable - back to the drawing board people - although this does highlight the fact that relying heavily on one particular provider could bite you in the a** if they go pear shaped.

This provides a good example of why monopolies are bad:  if you rely on Google, Amazon, or any of the other big players for your livelyhood, you are stuffed when they screw up.  I guess it’s a bit like investing all your money with some cronky US bank, although at least with the internet, “investors” are as stuffed as the “customers” as it is more democratized, which is one nice thought.

Tip of the day -  Web designers, put the effing analytics code and any other JavaScript that relies on external resources at the bottom of the page just before the </body> tag.  To do otherwise is a bit of a schoolboy error and I shall swear at your incompetent web offerings, then go somewhere else.

Creative Britain…

I have just been reading the Guardian’s article about the government via Ethan Eismann’s blog and here is my impression…

Funding for creative enterprises is pretty good for some areas in the UK. Across the rest of the UK, the “arts” receives lottery money and other funding, but probably not as much as some of the people would hope for - is it ever enough?

The area I live in received large amounts of money for lots of projects, not just creative  ones, under the EU’s Objective One funding.  This is changing in 2008, but more money will be coming in http://www.objectiveone.com/index.htm

With Objective One a lot of money has been funneled into generating new industry streams and the creative industry has been a major recipient with numerous organisations offering grants & funding for the creative industries - for example, some “funding funnels”:

http://www.flickernow.org

http://www.creativeskills.org.uk

One issue I have with the Objective One approach is that it is very much “gravy train” for a large amount of middle-class people and I feel that a lot of money does not trickle down to those who need the most help, instead they are patronised by various projects that often only skim the surface.  However, creativity is only recently becoming a recognised way of making money rather than something to take up your spare time -whether this is bad or good is a topic for another time.

It is nice to see that the government has recognised that creativity is such an important part of education, if for the wrong reasons.  Their pledge should hopefully help to counter a worrying trend in education that has seen timetables drop many creative subjects and reduce the time devoted to others in favour of science, maths, business and things seen as useful for making money.  Having worked in creative projects with schools I found it very frustrating that the only time some kids got to do creative stuff was outside school time, so if the government is not spinning us a big line, we will hopefully get some cool stuff happening again. This should also please the teachers who are fed up with the governments “measure everything” approach to education which has made lessons driven towards passing the measurement criteria applied to schools rather than making sure kids get an interesting and well rounded education.  Finally teachers may be able to get a bit more creative with their lessons - which will be a welcome break from the “Teaching for SATS” culture that seems rife in schools at the moment.

So, we will probably be seeing more projects for the likes of Creative Partnerships, Youth Music & other organisations who try to promote creativity for young people. This in turn is good for me, because I like doing projects with young people that gets them being creative… http://glenpike.co.uk/portfolio/automaton.htm

Grrr Royal Mail

I am beginning a war of attrition with Royal Mail and people who send junk mail to me.

I have registered with the MPS, but this does not seem to stop the postie sending us “hand delivered” junk mail that companies pay the post office to send me…

I reckon if you get this stuff through your door and don’t want to keep getting it, apart from putting a sticker on your letterbox, you could have some revenge.

1. Post all the junk mail without free pre-paid postage return envelopes straight back in the post box.

2. Either fill out pre-paid stuff with stupid fake names and addresses - not your neighbours please, or just tear it up and stick it in the envelope then post it.

Maybe if we all did this, Royal Mail would no longer find it cost effective to deliver this crap to us.

My postie is particularly annoying because he just dumps several copies of each leaflet through my letterbox, so watch this space…

Annoying phonecallers next…

Grrrr

Jello Biafra

Last night we went to see Jello Biafra at the Princess Pavilion in Falmouth. He was doing a spoken word tour and having heard some of his stuff from CD’s a mate had lent me, I was really keen to see what he had to say.

Well, he did not look like I expected at all, for some reason I expected someone a bit skinnier, maybe it’s his voice.  His “show”, for want of a better word, was really good, especially the monologues - check out “Ass Clowns in Toyland” which is a wonderful satire on Washington DC.
The stuff Jello talks about is mainly US orientated, but a large part of this was devoted towards “The War On Terror” (TWOT) & Bush generally being a tosser (TWAT). It’s interesting to hear that the US media is apparently so biased and dumbed down that most ordinary Americans may not actually know what is going on. I would be interested to hear what other Americans think about this point.

Jello made his points in a lucid and entertaining way. I am not going to believe everything I hear without reading around, but most of what he says does not come across as paranoid conspiracy theories.  Like Mark Thomas yesterday, he immediately distanced himself from all the people who think 9/11 was a conspiracy of the US government.

The only disappointing thing was the audience, from hearing the CD’s I was expecting a bit of audience participation, but I got really pissed off with people having their own private conversations & shouting out totally non related anarchist bollox at regular intervals. Jello  had to ask people to shut-up a couple of times, but handled the crapness pretty well. Someone commented that people may not have known some of the people, places or things he was talking about, but then neither did I, but at least I could get the gist of what he was trying to say and I learnt a few things on the way.

He summed stuff up pretty well by encouraging people to start small and try to make a difference in their community - not peeing up the walls would be a good start, but probably too difficult for the noisiest drunkest fuckwit in the audience, his partner being the second most irritating.  Maybe my community spirit should extend to them a bit more, but I would rather help people who want to help themselves…

Maybe there should have been an interval as the show ran for the best part of 3 hours, but Falmouth audiences have annoyed me yet again & my patience with pissed and stoned idiots is running thin - no wonder nothing gets done if you can’t remember what you are supposed to be doing when you wake up the next day.

Mark Thomas & McDemo’s

I have just come back from seeing Mark Thomas at The Acorn in Penzance and feeling very liberated after a very funny evening.

For those of you who don’t know, Mark Thomas is a comedian, activist and presenter who enjoys doing political stunts to make everyone realise how fucked up some of the things in our world are. Check out his website for more info www.markthomasinfo.com

Anyway, I saw him a few years ago, in Edinburgh where he mainly talked about his work on the Ilisu Dam campaign, which was both funny and then harrowing at the same time.

His latest target is the governments ridiculous law the “Serious Organised Crime and Police Act” 2005, which has a provision to restrict the right of protest near Parliament. As usual, he has found brilliant ways in which to exploit the ridiculous nature of the law and his act contained all the stories relating to this.

For all the armchair activists wanting to make a point, he has also started a company called McDemo’s that will protest on your behalf for £5 (The Happy Demo) or 99p (The Value Demo). Make sure you get over to www.mcdemos.com in order to see how you can register your protest.

It was a wicked show & if you can get to see him, or get his DVD then make sure you do. If not, at least buy a Value Demo and register your dissent with the politicians.

Keep an eye on his website too, as he is working on a huge stunt that could put the icing back on the cake - as long as the icing does not read anything political, we can all join in.

Tomorrow it’s Jello Biafra live at the Princess Pavilion in Falmouth. Get political!

Bemas Award

Surfers Against Sewage website conceptWow, I am stoked because a website I designed has just won an award!

I did the design concept for the Surfers Against Sewage website when I was working with uknetweb and it has just beaten the Telegraph and Green TV website to win a British Environment and Media Award

On top of all this, the guys at SAS managed to run their own protest on stage whilst collecting their award. The guys from SAS awarded Northumbrian Water with a golden loo-brush to highlight Northumbrian Waters’ attempts to turn off UV treatment for some important beaches up in the North East.

Anyway, congratulations to SAS and the guys at uknetweb who did a sterling job bringing the site to life…

About

I am a web-monkey / computer junky living in Cornwall and occasionally I tear myself away from my computer to go bodyboarding and playing in some of the beautiful places near my home. I love doing Flash and ActionScript stuff and feel that there needs to be more of this going on around here, so someday, if I have time, I may get my goddamn user group started. I may occasionally make controversial comments here about work, life and such, but this is essentially a diary and we still have the laws for a free press. Feel free to go somewhere else if you don't like it, or maybe comment if I dare turn them on. If you are: * my Gran, then sorry for swearing * my Mum, stop reading my diary dammit * everyone else, then get out more
